Last week, the St. Paul's Business Builders Networking Group heard from Steve Van Lieshout, P.E., president of K&S Technologies. I've known Steve for a couple of years now. Great guy. Always looking to help others. And a fantastic speaker, presenter, and motivator.
Anyway, Steve gave a talk to our group entitled, "Networking 101". In it, he said that networking doesn't happen during networking meetings - rather, it takes place outside of the meeting. And it happens in ways we might not even realize or consider. Networking happens while talking with other parents when helping our children during candy fundraising sales; when hunting or fishing with our buddies; when at the ball game or that big game day party with friends and family; at church, temple, or mosque; in our everyday conversations with others at work; in short, networking takes place in our daily routine.
It sounds overly obvious, yet it is simultaneously profound and insightful because we all need to be reminded of this simple truth from time to time - networking happens everyday during our normal activities and interactions with others. Too often, we get stuck in this mindset that networking somehow needs to be so structured, that it only happens from 8-9am on X day. But that can't be further from the truth.
I hope you get to meet Steve and hear him speak sometime. This man is truly an inspiration, and he will get you thinking in ways you never have before.
