“Highway to Hales: A Showcase of Hales Corners” to be Held on September 22, 2018

Celebration meant to raise awareness for the local business base, serve as a reminder that continued support and patronage is critical during road construction.

Hales Corners, Wisconsin – August 22, 2018 – The Hales Corners Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Village of Hales Corners and numerous community service organizations and individual businesses, presents a one-day event named, “Highway to Hales: A Showcase of Hales Corners,” to take place on Saturday, September 22, 2018, from 10am-2pm in the parking lot of the future Festival Foods on Hwy. 100.

“Highway to Hales” will bring a variety of area businesses and vendors, community groups, food, and entertainment to the site of the former K-Mart store at 5600 S. 108th Street, for the purposes of both celebrating the community and what it has to offer, as well as to bring much needed attention to the fact that businesses, particularly those along Hwy. 100, are feeling the impact during the road reconstruction project.

“Supporting our local business base is always important, but particularly at a moment like this, where you have a major highway construction project going on that’s severely impacting the ability of consistent economic activity to take place. We hope this event shows everyone just how valuable their continued support of our local businesses really is. It’s priceless,” said Mike Clavette of Clavette Insurance Agency and current president of the Hales Corners Chamber of Commerce.

Village president Dan Besson could not agree more with Clavette’s remarks. “These businesses mean so much to our community, in so many ways. They provide employment. They sponsor youth sports teams and support local service organizations. They provide critical tax base. We can go on and on. We all have an obligation to do what we can to show our appreciation and pay it forward,” he said.

James Huot, branch manager of Tri City National Bank and currently vice president of the Chamber, added, “It’s a day of coming together as community, raising awareness, and having fun. It’s all hands on deck, and we’re all in this together for Hales Corners. Come join us.”

Mark Nicholson Named Interim President of Hales Corners Chamber of Commerce

Nicholson, of Nicholson Realty, named by Board after previous president’s resignation last October; term to last until March 2018.

Hales Corners, Wisconsin – February 15, 2017 – The Board of Directors of the Hales Corners Chamber of Commerce (www.halescornerschamber.org) has appointed Board member Mark Nicholson interim president of the organization, for a term to last until the Chamber’s 2018 annual meeting in March.

Nicholson, of Nicholson Realty, succeeds Don Schwartz in the role following Mr. Schwartz’s resignation at the end of October this past year. Until Mr. Nicholson’s appointment, the Board had jointly managed the day-to-day business of the Chamber.

At over 100 members strong and growing, the Chamber is poised for a strong 2017. In addition to shoring up a plethora of administrative affairs in the interim leading up to the appointment of Mr. Nicholson, the Board has simultaneously been working to bring further value to the membership. Projects have included, among others, the launching of a newsletter, Chamber Chat; the rebooting of a more robust membership/welcoming committee; and the strengthening of ties with other community organizations.

The Chamber’s 2017 annual meeting and elections will take place on Tuesday, March 28, starting at 6pm, at the Whitnall District Office. Additional details will be provided in the near future.

Sandra's on the Park Review

A review of the restaurant, Sandra's on the Park, located in Hales Corners, Wisconsin.

I recently dined with family at Sandra's on the Park on a Friday evening. We each enjoyed the fish fry, available in either a 3-piece or 4-piece. For a small additional charge, soup and/or salad can be added.

We all agreed that the beer batter was done to absolute perfection. The french fries, coleslaw, and additional clam chowder were all very flavorful and satisfying. The additional house salad I had with ranch dressing was gourmet and hit the spot. Loaded with a colorful and lush array of vegetables, we're not talking a plate of iceberg with a couple of cucumbers and tomato slices here. And the marble rye bread was salted, a treat that you don't seem to find much in restaurants anymore. On top of that, it already comes buttered for you!

For dessert, try the authentic New York cheesecake with homemade (made daily in-house) raspberry sauce. Mmm...

Pleasant dining atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff combine with the food to make Sandra's on the Park a big win.

The Village of Hales Corners is located in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, and offers valuable resources for both residents and visitors alike. A large central shopping area, excellent schools, the Hales Corners Park and Pool, Whitnall Park and its world-famous Boerner Botanical Gardens, and Wehr Nature Center are all shared with bordering communities. These highlights, plus the ready access to the freeway system, promote the reputation of the Village as being “a great place to live” and visit.

For eating in Hales Corners, you will find everything from take-and-bake Papa Murphy's pizza and McDonald's to exclusive restaurants like Open Flame, Finn McGuire's, That's Amore, The Hale House, Ann's Italian Restaurant, Clifford's Supper Club, and the famous, historic Bosch Tavern. There are many other options in between to please just about anyone.

If you're looking for somewhere to visit, then you must try Whitnall Park, the jewel of Milwaukee County’s park system. It was created by the vision and skills of Charles B. Whitnall, the man known as the father of the Milwaukee County park system. Its 660 acres feature formal gardens, arboretum, 18-hole golf course, archery range, trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, toboggan slide, and ice skating pond, as well as children’s play areas and picnicking facilities. About one-third of the park lies in Hales Corners.

A major attraction of the park is the world-famous Boerner Botanical Gardens. The 50-acre formal gardens include a perennial mall, herb garden, annual garden, rock garden, and shrub mall. Seasonal displays of wild flowers, tulips, crabapples, peonies, iris, roses, and daylilies are commonly found here every year. Special events include Boerner in Bloom in June and summer concerts in the gardens. Within the boundaries of Whitnall Park is the Wehr Nature Center. This facility provides year-round nature programs, including many activities for families with young children. Other parks within the Village provide a variety of additional recreational opportunities. Hales Corners Park features baseball diamonds, playfields, walking paths, picnic areas, ice-skating in winter, and both adult and kiddie pools. Village-owned Schoetz Park offers an annually-stocked fishing pond, youth baseball through the Whitnall Youth Baseball Association, and other recreational programs for children and teens.

If you're interested in history, you might want to know that W. Ben Hunt, internationally known as an artist and writer, built a cabin in Hales Corners in 1924. That cabin, which now shares the site of the Hales Corners Library, features Native American artifacts collected by Hunt as well as his writings for Boys Life Magazine and the crafts he passed on to the Boy Scouts. The Hales Corners Historical Society sponsors periodic workshops that teach moccasin making, whittling, and beading. Nearby is the Hale Summer Kitchen and its adjacent displays, which depict the agricultural lifestyle of the area about 1850. The Milwaukee County Historical Society has designated both of these sites as official historical landmarks.

January Recycling Drive to Raise Funds for the Hales Corners Park and Pool 

Hales Corners, Wisconsin – December 23, 2015 – The Friends of the Hales Corners Park & Pool is excited to announce a month-long recycling collection of aluminum cans to raise needed funds for continued improvements to the park and pool.

The effort is in partnership with Eagle Disposal Inc. and Milwaukee County Parks.

During the entire month of January, participants can, at any time, drop off their aluminum cans in the dumpster near the southeast corner of the main parking lot adjacent to the Hales Corners Pool on S. New Berlin Road.

Additionally, tax-deductible cash donations in any amount are graciously accepted, and can be mailed to the Friends of Hales Corners Park & Pool at P.O. Box 7, Hales Corners, WI 53130.

“We’re very excited about this fundraising project, and it’s wonderful to see so many people and organizations coming together to pull this off,” noted Donald G. Schwartz, president of the Friends organization. “This is what private-public partnerships are all about.”
