Hales Corners Dining, Entertainment, and Attractions
The Village of Hales Corners is located in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, and offers valuable resources for both residents and visitors alike. A large central shopping area, excellent schools, the Hales Corners Park and Pool, Whitnall Park and its world-famous Boerner Botanical Gardens, and Wehr Nature Center are all shared with bordering communities. These highlights, plus the ready access to the freeway system, promote the reputation of the Village as being “a great place to live” and visit.
For eating in Hales Corners, you will find everything from take-and-bake Papa Murphy's pizza and McDonald's to exclusive restaurants like Open Flame, Finn McGuire's, That's Amore, The Hale House, Ann's Italian Restaurant, Clifford's Supper Club, and the famous, historic Bosch Tavern. There are many other options in between to please just about anyone.
If you're looking for somewhere to visit, then you must try Whitnall Park, the jewel of Milwaukee County’s park system. It was created by the vision and skills of Charles B. Whitnall, the man known as the father of the Milwaukee County park system. Its 660 acres feature formal gardens, arboretum, 18-hole golf course, archery range, trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, toboggan slide, and ice skating pond, as well as children’s play areas and picnicking facilities. About one-third of the park lies in Hales Corners.
A major attraction of the park is the world-famous Boerner Botanical Gardens. The 50-acre formal gardens include a perennial mall, herb garden, annual garden, rock garden, and shrub mall. Seasonal displays of wild flowers, tulips, crabapples, peonies, iris, roses, and daylilies are commonly found here every year. Special events include Boerner in Bloom in June and summer concerts in the gardens. Within the boundaries of Whitnall Park is the Wehr Nature Center. This facility provides year-round nature programs, including many activities for families with young children.
Other parks within the Village provide a variety of additional recreational opportunities. Hales Corners Park features baseball diamonds, playfields, walking paths, picnic areas, ice-skating in winter, and both adult and kiddie pools. Village-owned Schoetz Park offers an annually-stocked fishing pond, youth baseball through the Whitnall Youth Baseball Association, and other recreational programs for children and teens.
If you're interested in history, you might want to know that W. Ben Hunt, internationally known as an artist and writer, built a cabin in Hales Corners in 1924. That cabin, which now shares the site of the Hales Corners Library, features Native American artifacts collected by Hunt as well as his writings for Boys Life Magazine and the crafts he passed on to the Boy Scouts. The Hales Corners Historical Society sponsors periodic workshops that teach moccasin making, whittling, and beading. Nearby is the Hale Summer Kitchen and its adjacent displays, which depict the agricultural lifestyle of the area about 1850. The Milwaukee County Historical Society has designated both of these sites as official historical landmarks.

The Milwaukee Area this Fall and Winter - Interesting and Fun!
You might be surprised to find out how much is going on in and around Milwaukee this fall and winter. Apart from fun events coming up, this area has much more than you might think in terms of history, culture and natural beauty. This combination of interesting and fun makes it a great destination for all kinds of people, from families and couples to individuals or groups of friends, no matter what age you may be or what interests you may have.
For the nature-oriented there's the beautiful Oak Leaf Trail, a hundred miles of paved paths, parkways and connecting streets to explore.
There's also the famous Lake Geneva resort, nestled on the northeastern shores of Geneva Lake in southeast Wisconsin. This has been a resort community since just after the Civil War, when wealthy Chicago families discovered the site and began building summer homes there. Today, Lake Geneva is one of the Midwest's top getaway spots. The beautiful natural surroundings, laid-back attitude, lively downtown and understated opulence is just the beginning - it's the wide variety of events, expansive nature preserves, outstanding dining and lodging options, scenic walking and biking trails and top rated golf courses that attract countless guests. If you head further east you will find the Lake Michigan shoreline with several beach towns where you can enjoy great sand dunes, lighthouses, and a variety of water sports.
In and around Milwaukee you'll find music, museums, great dining, and festivals.
This November for example, there's the Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival at Pere Marquette Park – a ceremonial switch-on with live music, holiday entertainment, a visit from Santa and a dynamic fireworks show.
In December at the Wisconsin State Fair Park there is the ice fishing and winter sports show, where you can shop row upon row of exhibits with products and services dedicated to the ice fishing and winter sports enthusiast. Also at the State Fair Park in December you can visit Wisconsin's largest boating exposition with over 300 boats from over 75 manufacturers on display.
For a great family day out in late February the Tripoli Shrine Circus returns to the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena with the best circus performers in the world today. With amazing lighting and sound, human and animal performers bring you into the magical world of circus.
Going into 2016, there is the beautiful Winterfest at Boerner Botanical Gardens. You can take a guided walk through Boerner's forest with Mike Kreuser, Green Team sustainable landscape expert. Enjoy the learning experience further with winter-themed crafts and then warm up with hot dogs, chili, chips, and hot drinks.
If you like theatre, the professional Fireside Dinner Theater in Fort Atkinson has a surefire formula, offering Broadway musicals and heartwarming Christmas shows. For visitors who enjoy a dip into the past, with occasional breaks for cappuccino and crepes, Cedarburg, just 20 miles north of Milwaukee, is practically perfect. There's an 1864 woolen mill at one end of the main street, now housing a winery and two dozen shops.

Gardens of the Future with Melinda Myers
Ever wonder about what the future of Wisconsin gardening is going to look like? Well, wonder no longer! Boerner Botanical Gardens is offering you the chance to find out exactly which kinds of plants you might see popping up in future Wisconsin gardens during their Gardens of the Future walk with Melinda Myers.
The event will be held rain or shine on Wednesday July 25th, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Boerner Botanical Gardens (9400 Boerner Drive in Southwest Milwaukee) by gardening expert and TV/radio host Melinda Myers. Myers is also the author of several garden-related books including The Garden Book for Wisconsin (2005) and Month-by-Month Gardening in Wisconsin (2007).
During the walk you’ll be invited to visit an All American Trial Garden – one of only 43 in the United States – where you’ll be able to see some of the plants that are currently being tested for possible inclusion in Wisconsin gardens. You’ll also receive a tour of Boerner Botanical Gardens’ other test plots.
As this event is a part of the Melinda Myers series of garden walks, admission prices are set a little higher than their other events, at $20 for members and $25 for anyone else who wishes to participate. Proceeds from the event help to support the Friends of Boerner Botanical Gardens’ children’s plant science and environmental education program.
