By Martin Ennis

Content Management Systems offer a way of building websites without using hard coding. If you want to construct a website but have very little understanding of CSS, HTML and any other complex programming languages, these systems provide a great option. Set up and administration is simple to grasp, so with only a small amount of technical understanding users can build a professional looking website without having to study web-based coding.

Content management systems are the really practical choice for small businesses or those on a tight budget. You will not have to pay out for a professionally designed site if you use CMS and do the job yourself. This offers a great deal of influence over the image and content of your website.

When you frequently refresh the content on your site: for example updating information on new products, can help to increase the amount of site traffic as it retains the interest of your visitors. Changing the design of your site at a later stage is relatively simple and can be made without altering its content.

You can effectively manage and store all of the data on your site using designated folders. Appropriate restrictions are put on the amount of access that can be gained to the information held. Later on as you site begins to grow, the content management assistance is essential. Sites are protected from viruses and hackers thanks to sophisticated security systems.

Using CMS you can build highly interactive sites which allow multiple users to communicate effectively through email, instant messaging, a variety of social media platforms and forums. A higher search engine ranking can be achieved, due to the appeal and versatility this provides which often draws a higher quantity of site visitors.

A high number of visitors can cause difficulties with pages loading very slowly on some websites. With CMS, your web pages can load at a fast rate because there are many features put in place to avoid such issues.

Joomla, Drupal and Wordpress are the most popular content management systems. All three are open source software which allows you to freely download the software and make modifications.

With Web designers, Joomla tends to be the popular choice. It has loads of easily personalised features which make it designer friendly. The software can be difficult to integrate so it is ideal for those with a little experience.

Drupal has advanced features and is sometimes referred to as the 'developers CMS' it is great for constructing complex websites and more experienced developers are able to modify its code with ease. Although it does not have a great design features.

Wordpress is thought as the easiest of these three to grasp, particularly for beginners with little or no experience.
