"Recession Blues"

Went off to college, and earned my degree,
Told the future looked bright,
Went off to college, and earned my degree,
Told the future looked so bright,
But I look in my wallet,
And I’m far from worry-free.
Scraping and clawing just to get by,
Trying to stay above ground another day,
Scraping and clawing just to get by,
Trying to stay above ground another day,
I sometimes find myself balling,
Asking myself, “Why?”
Doing a lot of window shopping,
Looking at all those nice things,
Doing a lot of window shopping,
Looking at all those nice things,
I wish my income was more stable,
Instead it’s doing nothing but hopping.
It’s hard to have hope,
When you believe you did everything right,
It’s hard, so hard, to have hope,
When you believe you did everything right,
Sometimes have to turn to the bottle,
Just to be able to cope.
I’m a hard-working [young] man,
All I want to do is earn and provide,
I’m a hard-working [young] man,
And all I want to do is earn and provide,
Make a little something of myself,
And simply do the best I can.
Some say our fate’s in our own hands,
But I know [the economy] better than that,
Some say our fate’s in our own hands,
But I know [the economy] better than that,
We’re all attached together,
By a bunch of invisible rubber bands.
Getting harder and harder to float,
Running out of energy,
Getting harder and harder to float,
Running out of energy,
I guess I can take some comfort in knowing,
It’s not just me in this cruel boat.
