Good Elements In Website Design

By Peter Selby

In web designing, design is more than just using HTML to code up a page. The guidelines revealed below will help you create a more useful and effective website.

Balance

One of the most elementary guidelines in web designing is balance. It is the distribution of the light and heavy elements on a page. It shows one to layout web pages so that they will work efficiently. It's also a visible interpretation of design gravity. Remember that darker and larger objects appear heavier than lighter and smaller objects.

Balancing designs can be done in three ways:.

- Symmetrical Balance— done by placing elements in an even manner.
- Asymmetrical Balance— tougher to design because they do not have elements that match across the designs centerline.
- Discordant or off-balance— designs that suggest more action and motion.

Contrast

When folks encounter the word contrast, color is the very first thing that springs to mind. It is an accentuation of part differences in a website design. When you apply contrast in a web design, think beyond or more than only colors.

Also, contrast in web design can be done in 4 ways. It can be done by.

- Changing of fonts.
- Providing links.
- Using different sizes of photographs and elements.
- Using contrasting colors.

Stress

The eye is drawn to what is emphasized in a design. Though it is extremely enticing to give stress on everything in your internet site, as a designer you need to establish element hierarchy and apply stress accordingly based on the order.

With emphasis, you make the most significant component stand out in your design.

To incorporate emphasis or dominance in your design, try doing the following:

- Use semantic mark up that will provide some stress even if there aren't any styles.
- Changing of fonts or pictures.
- Use of contrasting colours.

Rhythm

It is said that the whole design can only ever be accepted once the brain has recognized the pattern in the rhythm. Rhythm instills a sense of order in the design as it seldom happens on its own.

To incorporate rhythm in your web design, you can repeat actual HTML texts, add images several times, use background-repeat property and repeat navigation parts of your design.

Unity

In design, unity is also named as vicinity. It provides cohesiveness to designs and is alleged to pull elements together.

Unity can be implemented through adjusting the plan of elements, changing the text spacing and playing with the box properties to persuade the padding and margins.
