Jean Segura will be the anchor to the Milwaukee Brewers lineup in 2014. Segura, who broke on the MLB scene in 2013, continued to get better for the Brewers as the season progressed. Add another season for the Brewers shortstop under his belt, and this 23-year-old shortstop from the Dominican Republic will not only be one of the best in his division, but in the game of baseball, as well.
Segura finished the 2013 season with a .294 batting average in 146 games for the Brewers. Along with the batting average, Segura picked up 173 hits in 588 plate appearances and 25 walks to help him finish with a .329 on base percentage. Segura also added 20 doubles, 10 triples, 12 home runs, and 49 runs driven in.
This type of production from a shortstop puts him in a class with other players around the league, including J.J. Hardy of the Baltimore Orioles and Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies. Now, he isn’t quite at their level yet, as he lacked home runs, but he made up with his speed and ability to hit for extra bases. Segura finished the season with 44 stolen bases out of 57 chances.
The one positive note on Segura is his track record in the minor leagues. He had been reliably consistent, finishing with at least a .300 batting average in four of his six minor league seasons.
When you add Segura to a lineup that consists of Aramis Ramirez, Ryan Braun, Carlos Gomez, and Khris Davis, this team has the firepower to put up big offensive numbers.
