Milwaukee County Deserves Better

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele released the following statement today in response to a story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Supervisor Deanna Alexander has been intimidated by Chairwoman Marina Dimitrijevic and other Supervisors for supporting significant reform of the County Board.

Alexander says she was also told not to talk to reporters and she says she has not been allowed to use taxpayer-funded County Board staff to work on a reform plan.

“Last April more than 80% of voters in 12 Milwaukee County municipalities called for significant change of the County Board. It’s disappointing that instead of taking action, the Chairwoman and some Supervisors continue to fight against real reform and punish those who want to move in that direction.

While Supervisor Alexander and I don’t agree on every issue, her willingness to have a dialogue on County Board reform is what the Board should be all about.”

Jammin' on Janesville 2013 Schedule

It's just around the corner, believe it or not ... the 2013 Jammin' on Janesville sessions here in Muskego! I went to the annual Jammin' on Janesville planning meeting a couple of nights ago, and boy, am I pumped for this year's lineup! 

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Jammin' on Janseville, it's held over three Fridays during the summer (always the first Friday of June, July, and August). It launched in 2011 as a way to both celebrate the reconstruction project of Janesville Road in Muskego, a major, major undertaking, as well as to encourage folks to continue to patronize the businesses along Janesville Road during this construction, which is very crucial for them. It's all too easy to want to avoid road construction at all costs, so Jammin' on Janesville serves as a friendly reminder that these businesses, which give so much back to the community in a variety of ways, really need our support during this critical time.

2013 marks the third summer for Jammin' on Janesville, which can be summed up as a street fair-style celebration featuring entertainment and live music, food and beverage vendors, businesses showcasing their product and service offerings, community service clubs and organizations hosting fundraisers, and a lot more. There's plenty to see and do for all age groups.

2013 Jammin' on Janseville dates are:

New for 2013 is a longer session. The fun will go on for another hour, from 5-10pm.

Mark Dawson's New Solo Album, "Making Noise"

If you appreciate good music, you must get your hands on a copy of Mark Dawson's latest solo album, "Making Noise". It was just released in recent weeks.

Mark Dawson is lead singer of the legendary 1960s pop/rock band, The Grass Roots. "Making Noise" is his second solo album, and it is truly a lot of fun. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mark a few months back, and I also offered to write up a press release for him back in December to help him announce the album's release. It was also a great pleasure to interview Carl Giammarese, lead singer of 1960s greats, The Buckinghams, a little over a year ago. Mark and Carl teamed up on a great duet for the album entitled, "So Unusual". Also on the album, among other awesome original material by Mark, is his take on "Long As I Can See The Light" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Being a big CCR fan, I always appreciate a good cover of any CCR song, and Mark did a great job at it (I interviewed CCR drummer Doug Clifford, too!)

Mark Dawson thanked me on the album case, which I really appreciate.

When my copy of "Making Noise" arrived about a week ago, it came autographed by Mark. But what was really special for me was that he also included me in his "thank yous" on the CD case! I certainly didn't expect that. He didn't have to do that. I really appreciate it.

So check it out. If you like good music, you have to make "Making Noise" a part of your collection.

New Year's Resolutions

For those of you who made New Year's resolutions, how are you coming along with them so far? Here's mine, which I borrowed from the late, great Duane Allman, legendary guitarist and co-founder of The Allman Brothers Band. I've used these words as my New Year's resolution for at least the last couple of years now, and I aspire to become better at living up to them with each passing year. It goes like this:

"This year I will be more thoughtful of my fellow man, exert more effort in each of my endeavors professionally as well as personally, take love wherever I find it, and offer it to everyone who will take it. In this coming year I will seek knowledge from those wiser than me and try to teach those who wish to learn from me. I love being alive and I will be the best man I possibly can."

Would Online Marketing Assist Sparkster In Climbing the Ranks?

I've been gaming for quite a while now and I've learned about the characters with so much potential, too. Their games have been fun and they themselves have been likable, so why have they seemingly fallen off of the face of the Earth? One such character that fits this well has got to be the one known as Sparkster. Many people were fortunate to know about him but for those unfamiliar, just know that he could use online marketing to find fame that had left him so long ago.

I think that while Sonic the Hedgehog started the craze of animal mascots with outlandish personalities, the failed attempts by other companies to cash in essentially killed it. However, I believe that Sparkster was different because of how he stood above all other failed characters. This particular opossum mostly stood out due to his aesthetic as he used a sword to fight and wore a suit of armor with a jetpack attached to it. This very appearance was ingenious and it only helped people like him that much more.

When you consider the likability of Sparkster and the quality of his games as well why is it that he seemed to drop in popularity over the course of time? It's been said that he didn't catch on with audiences, though I don't know how accurate this claim is. I think that, more than anything, Konami failed to stay committed to the character, even though the games were fun. Sparkster didn't deserve to be pushed away from the spotlight because of the actions of others.

However, it's not like Sparkster's character has to remain done and over with forever. In fact, I'm sure that online marketing could help him come back to prominence, especially in the eyes of a younger audience. His appearance is one that is akin to a Swiss army knife, since he not only has the ability to strike enemies with his sword but he can fly about with the use of his jetpack as well. It'd be easy for a digital marketing firm the likes of the fishbat to highlight his strengths and build up a brand based on them.

There's no question that people have moved on from Sparkster since the 90's but it's not like he hasn't tried to come back. It was in 2010 that the game simply titled "Rocket Knight" was released as a digital title, though this game was more like a modest homage as opposed to a platform that Sparkster could use to launch himself back into fame. It's a shame because that's exactly what he needs. I feel like if he had the right limelight cast upon him, he could return to prominence once more.
